Retro Ceramics - British

There is such an amazing wealth of styles, techniques, artists and potteries to consider when talking about British Studio Pottery from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s that it’s difficult to know where to begin. There are obviously the very famous and well-documented names such as Briglin, Rye, Cinque Ports, Buchan, Iden, Jersey, Lotus, Prinknash, St Ives, Tremar and Troika to name just a few, and the well known and talented artists who founded or were employed by these potteries - there were even more relatively unknown artists and potteries producing work of an equal significance and beauty.

When we find a piece of studio pottery that interests us and there’s a pottery or maker’s mark, we immediately start our research to find out more (although there’s no guarantee we’ll find out anything – some studio pottery marks are incredibly difficult to decipher). However, if there’s no mark we can sometimes suggest who might be responsible by looking at similar pieces. But not knowing the provenance of any piece for certain definitely doesn’t detract in any way from the beauty of a lovely piece of hand made pottery. It all adds to the charm in our opinion!

So, whether big, small, colourful, plain, glazed, unglazed, functional, decorative, rough, smooth – every piece is unique and worthy of inclusion in this section of our site. We do hope you like the small selection of British retro studio pottery we present here.
