1960-1965 Hornsea Pottery Yellow & White 'Summit' Salt & Pepper Set and Sugar Sifter by John Clappison - HORN-1SUMMITSP1

£35.00

Dating from 1960-1965 and from the famous English pottery, Hornsea, here is a wonderful salt and pepper set and matching sugar sifter in the 'Summit' pattern in the yellow and white colourway (this range also comes in black/white, red/white and blue/white) designed by the legendary John Clappison.  Tall and elegantly tapering to the top with alternately glazed yellow and white ridges running vertically from top to bottom and still bearing their original rubber stoppers the salt and pepper pots are not marked to the bases however the sugar sifter (with a white plastic top) is fully marked with 'Hornsea, Made in England, Summit'.   I don't believe these have ever been used - they're in excellent condition and, with many salt and pepper pots that have been used you find the holes chipped from where things have been prodded into them over the years (usually a fork prong).  In this instance not only are the holes in pristine condition they are also rather too large for use - the salt pot in particular has a very large hole that would allow far too much salt out - this may well be the reason for their survival in such amazing condition.  They simply weren't practical to be used everyday and have been safely displayed instead.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

SIZE:  Height: Salt & Pepper 6.75in/17cm  Sugar Sifter 5.75in/12cm      Weight  518g

CONDITION: Gorgeous original condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines.

Retro Ceramics - British

Hornsea Pottery was established in 1949 and started off as a small business producing tourist ware. Just three years later in 1951 they were doing so well they moved premises and by 1954 they had to move again to the site where they remained until they went into liquidation in the late 1980’s.

They employed now legendary designers such as Marion Campbell, John Clappison, Alan Luckham and Martin Hunt, amongst others, with John Clappison in particular being recognised early on in his career as a serious talent and appointed Chief Designer to Hornsea Pottery in 1958 at the age of only 21. His modernist, stylish and innovative designs being, quite rightly, highly collectable today – and include the very kitsch ‘Elegance’ and ‘Tricorn’ ranges from the late 1950’s and his (later) range of Muramics (ceramic wall-plaques usually teak backed, sometimes mounted on canvas and still being made by John Clappison and sold in limited editions today). Hornsea throughout the 1960’s, 1970’s and up until they closed were also producing many different styles of pots, ornaments and kitchenware – including our personal favourites; John Clappison’s ‘World’s Best’ mugs and his ‘newsprint’ series of animal mugs (Hippo, Lion, Toucan etc).

We are very pleased to be able to offer you a selection of what we consider to be some of the best Hornsea Pottery designs from the latter half of the 20th century.
