Rare 1960s Otto Keramik (West Germany) Red and Black Lava Glazed Vase - AA-OTTOKERAM1

£299.00

Dating from the 1960s here is a fantastic large (9.5 inches in height) lava glazed vase from Otto Keramik designed by the legendary Otto Gerharz and Kurt Tschorner.   Fully hand-made - very few would have been produced and this is therefore an extremely rare and desirable vase.  It looks incredible on display - this is the vase that pretty much epitomises the term 'Fat Lava'.  With a red drippy base topped off with thick bubbly black lava, the interior a pale turquoise glaze and with the customary felt base (blue).  Groovy!  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

SIZE:  Height 9.5in/24.5cm    Weight 1460g

CONDITION:  Great original condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines.

OVERSEAS BUYERS: Please note that with packaging this item weighs over the Royal Mail 2kg threshold, therefore overseas buyers will need to contact us in advance of checkout for an exact postage price to your area (free postage to UK addresses still applies).

Retro Ceramics - West German/Swiss/Austrian

This section is devoted to the incredible pottery being produced in West Germany during the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. The well-known companies being Bay, Scheurich, Carstens, Roth, Ruscha and Steuler to name just a very few. There were, however, a great number of potteries operating in West Germany at that time and most of them (including some of those listed above) didn't mark their work uniquely, using similar numeric methods of backstamping.

The 1960's can quite rightly be considered the creative peak for West German pottery with the emergence of crazy organic shapes and heavily textured and drippy glazes - lava being a perfect example - in a contradictory mixture of muted earthy tones and bright vibrant colours (orange, red, blue and black in particular). There appeared to be no rules although the reality is that these items were beautifully designed and well thought through - as a result some of the particularly iconic examples are already generating a lot of interest from collectors and fetching high prices.

West German ceramics sit brilliantly in Pips Trip and we intend to put a special emphasis on this area by stocking some of the best retro examples we can find.

We'd recommend collectors buy a copy of Mark Hill's excellent book 'Fat Lava - West German Ceramics of the 1960s and 1970s.' Published in June 2006 the book was produced in conjunction with an exhibition of the Dr Graham Cooley collection of West German ceramics held at the King's Lynn Arts Centre at the same time. You can buy a copy direct from www.MarkHillPublishing.com - Mark will sign copies too, just ask when you order.
