This is A fantastic and relatively unusual large Mdina vase - again an early piece circa early 1970's. It is tall and has a lovely flared rim, is made from swirly clear, brown and orange glass with unusual flashes of pale blue glass (the base in particular) and has random strapping around the outside. It also bears an applied prunt stamped with an 'M'. This is an extremely decorative piece of retro glass and a must for the Mdina collector. Unsigned with a flat polished base. SIZE: Height 8in/20cm Rim 6in/15.5cm Weight 1318g

CONDITION: Fantastic original condition - no chips or fleabites - it does have a small crack to the flared part of rim which cannot be felt by touch on either side and is barely noticeable - however I have photographed it much magnified (see all photographs).

Retro Glass - Maltese

Michael Harris (1933-1994) had a varied and illustrious career in glass. His work is quite rightly highly collectable today with a 'Michael Harris' signed piece being considered the 'holy grail' for collectors of his work. Originally an RCA tutor, it is little known that Michael Harris designed the Calypto range of slump moulded, printed fiestaware for Chance Glass based on Eucalpytus leaves and flowers (and other Chance designs also believed to be his work).

In 1969, together with his wife Elizabeth, he set up Mdina glass on the island of Malta - the colours and textures of the glass produced by them there said to have been inspired by the glorious colours of the Maltese coastline and landscape. Michael and Elizabeth left Malta in 1972 and set up the famous Isle of Wight Studio in 1973 (where to this day his widow and sons continue the tradition of producing the glorious handmade glass synonymous with the Isle of Wight). In 1989 Michael and his wife set up Gozo Glass on Gozo, sister island to Malta, as a retirement project, it is now under the ownership of the Harris’ original founding partner and continues to produce top quality and highly collected glass today.
