This is a particularly decorative piece of Isle of Wight Glass from the pink 'Golden Peacock' range which features swirls of pink glass trailed over a white opalescent ground and finally rolled in gold leaf.  Unusually, this piece is signed by Michael Harris himself with 'Michael Harris IOW ENGLAND' to the base in his unmistakeably neat script - it was almost certainly signed especially for the American market.  Above the signature is the triangular Isle of Wight label.

SIZE:  Height  3in/7.75cm    Weight  195g

CONDITION:  Excellent original undamaged condition, signed by Michael Harris and bearing it's original triangular Isle of Wight label.

Retro Glass - Maltese

Michael Harris (1933-1994) had a varied and illustrious career in glass. His work is quite rightly highly collectable today with a 'Michael Harris' signed piece being considered the 'holy grail' for collectors of his work. Originally an RCA tutor, it is little known that Michael Harris designed the Calypto range of slump moulded, printed fiestaware for Chance Glass based on Eucalpytus leaves and flowers (and other Chance designs also believed to be his work).

In 1968, together with his wife Elizabeth, he set up Mdina glass on the island of Malta - the colours and textures of the glass produced by them there said to have been inspired by the glorious colours of the Maltese coastline and landscape. Michael and Elizabeth left Malta in 1972 and set up the famous Isle of Wight Studio in 1973 (where to this day his widow and sons continue the tradition of producing the glorious handmade glass synonymous with the Isle of Wight). In 1989 Michael and his wife set up Gozo Glass on Gozo, sister island to Malta, as a retirement project, it is now under the ownership of the Harris’ original founding partner and continues to produce top quality and highly collected glass today.

For a copy of the only book available on the subject make sure you visit www.MarkHillPublishing.com and buy a copy of 'Michael Harris: Mdina Glass & Isle of Wight Studio Glass' direct from the author Mark Hill. It's a superb new reference and essential reading for collectors - I really can't recommend this book enough! Mark is also happy to sign and dedicate copies if wanted, just ask.

It is our intention to offer our customers a wide and varied selection of Michael Harris designed glass - whether from Mdina, Isle of Wight or Gozo glass studios.
