Bay/Scheurich/Roth/Lava ceramics

Retro Ceramics - West German/Swiss/Austrian - Bay/Scheurich/Roth/Lava ceramics (8 items)
This section is devoted to the incredible pottery being produced in West Germany during the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. The well-known companies being Bay, Scheurich, Carstens, Roth, Ruscha and Steuler to name just a very few. There were, however, a great number of potteries operating in West Germany at that time and most of them (including some of those listed above) didn't mark their work uniquely, using similar numeric methods of backstamping.

The 1960's can quite rightly be considered the creative peak for West German pottery with the emergence of crazy organic shapes and heavily textured and drippy glazes - lava being a perfect example - in a contradictory mixture of muted earthy tones and bright vibrant colours (orange, red, blue and black in particular). There appeared to be no rules although the reality is that these items were beautifully designed and well thought through - as a result some of the particularly iconic examples are already generating a lot of interest from collectors and fetching high prices.

West German ceramics sit brilliantly in Pips Trip and we intend to put a special emphasis on this area by stocking some of the best retro examples we can find.

We'd recommend collectors buy a copy of Mark Hill's excellent book 'Fat Lava - West German Ceramics of the 1960s and 1970s.' Published in June 2006 the book was produced in conjunction with an exhibition of the Dr Graham Cooley collection of West German ceramics held at the King's Lynn Arts Centre at the same time. You can buy a copy direct from www.MarkHillPublishing.com - Mark will sign copies too, just ask when you order.

code: STEULER-BLUEPOPPI
1963 Steuler (West Germany) 'Poppi' Vase by Cari Zalloni

Here is a wonderful blue 'Poppi' vase from the West German ceramic manufacturer Steuler, dating from 1963 and designed by Cari Zalloni.  In a seriously funky shape and finished in two vibrant blue glazes, these are highly collectable items that don't come on the market often.  Marked to the base with the Steuler stamped mark and the numbers '232/15' (form number/size).

SIZE:  Height  6in/15cm   Weight  550g

CONDITION:  Gorgeous original undamaged condition with no chips or cracks.

1960s Strehla (East Germany) Lava/Pumice Glazed Planter

code: EG-STREHLAPLANTER
1960s Strehla (East Germany) Lava/Pumice Glazed Planter

So funky - I love this - a pottery planter from the East German manufacturer Strehla and dating from the 1960s.  It has a very bright orange ground and is hand decorated with a fabulously swirly pattern in a green lava/pumice type textured glaze.  Unique and highly decorative.

SIZE:  Height 5.5in/13.5cm   Diameter 6in/15.5cm

CONDITION:  Really great original condition with no damage other than some scuffing to the base which is to be expected in an item of this vintage - see all photos.

1950s/60s Sgraffito 'Horses' Wall Plate

code: HORSES-WP
1950s/60s Sgraffito 'Horses' Wall Plate

This is a particularly attractive decorative wall plate but I haven't yet been able to find out anything about it.  It's quite clearly European/Continental production and dates from circa 1950s/60s.  My photos don't really do it justice - the ground has a matt finish decorated with a sgraffito (scratched) decoration and, in the centre are two beautiful stylised horses in high gloss brown and white glazes.  There are no makers or artists markings to the back - just a gold foil label which says 'Manuel Feulloch' - this is most likely a retailer's sticker rather than a manufacturer's one.

SIZE:  Diameter 9in/23cm

CONDITION:  Lovely original undamaged condition.

Rare 1960s Schaffenacker (West Germany) Drippy Glazed Vase (V603)

code: AASCHAFFEN-DRIP
Rare 1960s Schaffenacker (West Germany) Drippy Glazed Vase (V603)

Dating from the 1960s here is a brilliant vase from the West German ceramics manufacturer Schaffenacker - designed by  Helmut Schaffenacker.  Fully hand made - very few would have been made (probably less than 50) and this is therefore an extremely rare and desirable vase.  It looks incredible on display - taking the shape of various stacked cylindrical shapes which have been glazed in the most fabulously drippy gloss glazes in various hues of brown, red, orange, blue... it's an amazing piece.  Marked to the base with 'V603'.

SIZE:  Height 6.5in/17cm

CONDITION:  Good original condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines.

1960s Bay Keramik (West Germany) Large Floor Vase #1
1960s Bay Keramik (West Germany) Large Floor Vase #1

This is large and extremely unusual - a West German floor vase from from Bay Keramik dating from the 1960s or thereabouts in a great handled shape and decorated with a regular impressed pattern which has been overglazed in a caramel coloured semi-matt glaze.  Fully marked to the base with 'BAY W-GERMANY 255-45' where 255 is the form number and 45 being it's size in centimetres.

SIZE:  Height 18in/45cm   Weight 2540g

1971-1972 Spara Keramik (West Germany) Large Vase with handle by Halidan Kutlu

code: BSPARA-HK1
1971-1972 Spara Keramik (West Germany) Large Vase with handle by Halidan Kutlu

This is a pretty unusual pot by the West German ceramics manufacturer Spara and designed by Halidan Kutlu - a Turkish designer who worked for Spara from 1971-1972  (his designs are recognisably middle-Eastern in inspiration and appearance).  Not much is known about Spara in general so I can't elaborate further however as you can see from photographs it's a large and extremely decorative vase in a great handled shape glazed in a glossy brown and with an impressed patterned band around the central section.  Marked to the base with 'SPARA 553/31' with 553 referring to the shape number and 31 to the height in centimetres.

SIZE:  Height 12in/31cm   Weight 2100g

CONDITION:  Fantastic original condition - no chips, cracks or hairlines.
