Briglin/Rye/Iden/Cinque Ports Studio Pottery

Retro Ceramics - British - Briglin/Rye/Iden/Cinque Ports Studio Pottery (13 items)
There is such an amazing wealth of styles, techniques, artists and potteries to consider when talking about British Studio Pottery from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s that it’s difficult to know where to begin. There are obviously the very famous and well-documented names such as Briglin, Rye, Cinque Ports, Buchan, Iden, Jersey, Lotus, Prinknash, St Ives, Tremar and Troika to name just a few, and the well known and talented artists who founded or were employed by these potteries - there were even more relatively unknown artists and potteries producing work of an equal significance and beauty.

When we find a piece of studio pottery that interests us and there’s a pottery or maker’s mark, we immediately start our research to find out more (although there’s no guarantee we’ll find out anything – some studio pottery marks are incredibly difficult to decipher). However, if there’s no mark we can sometimes suggest who might be responsible by looking at similar pieces. But not knowing the provenance of any piece for certain definitely doesn’t detract in any way from the beauty of a lovely piece of hand made pottery. It all adds to the charm in our opinion!

So, whether big, small, colourful, plain, glazed, unglazed, functional, decorative, rough, smooth – every piece is unique and worthy of inclusion in this section of our site. We do hope you like the small selection of British retro studio pottery we present here.

We don't (yet) know which pottery made this delightful piggybank - possibly Surrey Ceramics who made piggybanks in various different styles and colours - although this is just a tentative suggestion at the moment.  Whoever made it there's no denying it's a delightful little thing - very unusual in having no legs and sitting on his tummy!  Decorated to both sides with a pretty stylised floral design and glazed in an oatmeal coloured glaze so typical of the period.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

£35.00

From the Briglin Pottery (London) here is a gorgeous coffee pot/lidded jug (I've seen these being sold without the lid described as jugs) - in their 'Swirl' design which is applied using the manganese oxide and wax-resist white glaze technique Briglin were famous for.  This is a fabulous and large piece of retro studio pottery, is marked to the base with 'BRIGLIN'.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

Small Cinque Ports Pottery (The Monastery, Rye) Beaker
£15.00

Here is an extremely pretty little beaker with a white ground and hand painted with a blue swirly pattern.  Marked to the base with the circular stamp saying 'CINQUE PORTS POTTERY LTD, THE MONASTERY, RYE'.  A lovely piece of retro British studio pottery.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

SIZE:  Height  3.5in/9cm   Weight  118g

CONDITION: Fabulous original condition with no chips or cracks.  There is a pinprick sized area of glaze loss to the rim and crazing to the surface glaze mainly to the base.

Cinque Ports Pottery was established in 1956 by former Rye Pottery employee, David Sharp, together with his friend George Cray.  They continued until 1964 when they parted company and George moved to The Monastery with his production being marked as such on the back-stamp.  He was very successful but handed the company over to Jim Elliot (from Iden Pottery) in the 1980's who again changed the back-stamp slightly.  So we can be certain from the back-stamp on this piece that it is George Cray's production and dates from between 1964 and the 1980's.

Cinque Ports Pottery (The Monastery, Rye) Salt & Pepper Set

SIZE:  Height: Salt 6.75in/17cm  Pepper 4in/10cm    Weight  326g

CONDITION: Great original condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines.
