1960's/70's Studio Stoneware Salt & Pepper Pots with Corks - impressed with 'db'
1960's/70's Studio Stoneware Salt & Pepper Pots with Corks - impressed with 'db'

SOLD

These are gorgeous, extremely tactile and in a very unusual shape and date from the late 1960's/early 1970's.  Made from an oatmeal speckled stoneware in a squat globular shape with cork stoppers these are fabulous pieces of studio ceramics.  The salt pot has a raised pronounced hole whereas the pepper is flat and both pots are impressed with the letters/initials 'db' - obviously this is the artist's mark but we haven't yet been able to pin this down to a particular artist/designer.  These are just a really nice, very usuable and well-designed salt and pepper set that look as fresh today as when they were made.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

1957 Rye Pottery Blue & White Striped Small Bowl

SOLD

More fabulous blue and white hand painted Rye Pottery in the form of a small bowl.  This one, unlike all the others for sale above, is NOT impressed with David Sharp's monogram, so was not thrown by him and probably dates to around 1957 just after he had left to set up Cinque Ports Pottery.  But it almost certainly was decorated at the same time as the others and is from the same range with a white glazed ground and inner decorated with beautiful hand painted blue stripes to the outside.  Stamped to the base with 'MADE IN RYE POTTERY ENGLAND'.  A highly collectable piece of retro British studio pottery.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

From the Rye Pottery in Sussex here is a gorgeous pink bud vase dating from the 1950s and possibly the work of David Sharp.  In a simple waisted form and decorated with a pink glaze in a pattern of faint lines this is so typical of the 1950s both in colour and shape.   Stamped to the base in blue with 'England Rye Pottery', this is a very pretty and decorative item.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

Early 1960's Cinque Ports Pottery (Rye, Sussex) Large Yellow, White & Black Striped Tankard
Early 1960's Cinque Ports Pottery (Rye, Sussex) Large Yellow, White & Black Striped Tankard

SOLD

This is an early piece of Cinque Ports pottery - we can date this specifically to the early 1960's because of the backstamp.  This was made after 1960 when they added the plural 'S' to Cinque Port but before 1964 when former Rye Pottery employee David Sharp and his friend George Gray, who founded the pottery together in 1956, split up and it was moved to The Monastery (under George Gray's management) with production from that point on being marked as such on the backstamp.  It is an extremely large and decorative tankard in the highly collectable and sought after stripes - a white ground hand painted with yellow and black lines.  Marked to the base with 'CINQUE PORTS POTTERY, RYE SUSSEX, ENGLAND' and a hand written code 'R26'.  A gorgeous piece of retro British studio pottery.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

Cinque Ports Pottery (The Monastery, Rye) Coffee Container
Cinque Ports Pottery (The Monastery, Rye) Coffee Container

SOLD

Cinque Ports Pottery was established in 1956 by former Rye Pottery employee, David Sharp, together with his friend George Cray.  They continued until 1964 when they parted company and George moved to The Monastery with his production being marked as such on the back-stamp.  He was very successful but handed the company over to Jim Elliot (from Iden Pottery) in the 1980's who again changed the back-stamp slightly.  So we can be certain from the back-stamp on this piece that it is George Cray's production and dates from between 1964 and the 1980's.

Here is a most attractive pottery container from the Cinque Ports Pottery decorated with a pale blue glazed ground marked with the word 'Coffee' to the front and stylised coffee beans around the back (not shown).   It has it's original wooden lid with original rubber seal.   Marked to the base with the circular stamp saying 'CINQUE PORTS POTTERY LTD, THE MONASTERY, RYE'.  A lovely piece of retro British studio pottery.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

Cinque Ports Pottery (The Monastery, Rye) Salt & Pepper Set

SOLD

Here is a lovely pottery salt and pepper set from the Cinque Ports pottery decorated with a pale blue glazed ground and a darker wax resist swirl pattern around the lower section.  The salt pot is much larger than the pepper pot and both in an unusual shape with an ovoid base and flared rim.  Still with their original rubber stoppers and marked to the bases with the circular stamp saying 'CINQUE PORTS POTTERY LTD, THE MONASTERY, RYE' although both marks are rather indistinct.  A lovely example of retro British studio pottery.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

1976 Iden Pottery (Rye) Green Tankard
1976 Iden Pottery (Rye) Green Tankard

SOLD

Iden Pottery, best known for its excellent quality pottery and stoneware, was set up by the legendary Dennis Townsend in a small village called Iden, near Rye in Sussex.  Dating from 1976 here is a fabulous green and black glazed tankard.  The high gloss glaze has touches of brown around the rim and the horizontal banding above the darker pattern to the lower half, which is slightly raised and has an interesting surface texture.  The base of the tankard is in a light cream and is clearly marked with the blue circular Iden Pottery mark which says 'IDEN POTTERY, Hand Made, RYE, SUSSEX'.  This is extremely decorative and obviously a very good quality piece of hand made studio pottery which would make a brilliant addition to any Iden, Rye or studio pottery collection.

Sandygate Pottery (England) Paisley Patterned Ceramic Storage Container
Sandygate Pottery (England) Paisley Patterned Ceramic Storage Container

SOLD

Made by the Sandygate Pottery in Devon this is a very attractive pottery storage jar with it's original wooden lid.  Decorated with a paisley type pattern on a white ground and stamped to the base in red with an illustration of an angel holding a shield and the words 'SANDYGATE POTTERY LTD, MADE IN DEVON ENGLAND' this looks great on display and is, in our opinion, an unusual item and very typical of it's period of manufacture (the 1960's or thereabouts).

SOLD

Here is a very pretty studio pottery glazed mug dating from the 1960's or 1970's (difficult to be more precise in this instance) and handmade from a terracotta coloured pottery decorated with a green/blue/grey coloured slip glaze all over (including the inside).  Stamped to the base of the handle with 'ST. IVES' (partly obscured by the glaze - photographed in close-up) we don't, however, know yet who the designer might be.  What is certain is that this is an extremely decorative and obviously good quality piece of hand made studio pottery which would make a brilliant addition to any collection.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

1960s Decorative 'Birds in a Tree' Wall Plaque (Blue)
1960s Decorative 'Birds in a Tree' Wall Plaque (Blue)

SOLD

Despite much research I'm afraid I've not yet been able to find out who designed or made this.  It takes the form of a charmingly decorated glazed circular wall plaque decorated with birds sitting on branches in a tree.  It has a John Clappison-esque feel to it but we know it's not a Clappison design - equally it could be by one of the Scandinavian factories.  We have another of these tiles with the same decoration but in a brown glazed colourway, also currently for sale.  We'd estimate them to date from the 1960s.

1963 Hornsea Pottery 'Impact' Vases by John Clappison
1963 Hornsea Pottery 'Impact' Vases by John Clappison

SOLD

I love these - dating from 1963 we have a pair of Hornsea Pottery vases from the 'Impact' range designed by John Clappison and in production only for a short period in 1963 - items from this range are therefore relatively scarce.  The base markings are stamped onto a small raised lozenge of pottery - interestingly one of the pots has a glazed base lozenge, the other is unglazed - both pots are also impressed with the shape number '634'.
