Chance/Pilkington Glass

Retro Glass - British - Chance/Pilkington Glass (4 items)
This section of our site concentrates on the funky and colourful retro glass from Chance/Pilkington - with items designed by the legendary Michael Harris and Margaret Casson amongst others and in the trademark Chance slump moulded shapes and printed designs of fiestaware.

One of the things that particularly interest us in British retro glass from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s is the huge variety available to collectors – both in terms of production and price. This period of British glass making produced breathtaking studio pieces; brightly coloured and highly textured glass; elegant and stylised pieces; and of course the fabulously kitsch, psychedelic, flower power and monochromatic Chance fiestaware glass - there is something to suit every taste and budget and all have earned an equal place here in Pips Trip.

Our sincere thanks to the researcher and author David Encill for his generous help in learning about Chance glass and in helping to identify some items. We are also pleased and very excited to announce the impending publication of David's new book 'Chance Expressions' scheduled for release in Spring 2007. This is the first comprehensive guide to the domestic glassware produced by Chance Brothers - visit www.ChanceGlass.net for further information and details on how to order your copy.

1962 Chance Glass 7 inch 'Candystripe' Hankie Vase

code: CHA-CANDYHV
1962 Chance Glass 7 inch 'Candystripe' Hankie Vase
£45.00 (email for availability)

Chance Glass hankie vases are just so kitsch we love them - particularly this large 'Candystripe' vase dating from 1962.  With turquoise and white vertical stripes and a slightly mis-shapen form (these vases were made by slumping a plate of printed hot glass over a mould to form the folds) it's a very decorative item and bang on trend with today's interiors taking inspiration from 1950s and 1960s design.  Please see all photographs for alternative views or close-ups.

SIZE:  Height 7in/18cm   Weight 670g

CONDITION: Whilst there are no chips or cracks to the glass - the rim and all points remain intact and undamaged, there are however various scratches and scrapes to the overprinted design and one crescent shaped flaw of approx. 5mm (original to manufacture).  Overall, in good condition considering it's age and the delicate nature of the overprinted design.

1973 Chance Glass Turquoise 'Lotus' Pattern Round Plate

code: CHA-LOTUSROUND
1973 Chance Glass Turquoise 'Lotus' Pattern Round Plate
£25.00

This type of Chance glass is fabulously funky and is, in our opinion, amongst the best designs that Chance produced during the 1970s - they would have been hugely fashionable at the time.  This particular dish is round in shape with a fluted and gilded rim and with their trippy, psychedelic 'Lotus' pattern screenprinted on the reverse in turquoise.  We think these are brilliant, this is a very scarce Chance pattern and a must for any serious retro and/or Chance glass collector.  Please see all photographs for alternative views or close-ups.

SIZE:  Diameter 9.5in/24cm   Weight 384g

CONDITION: Gorgeous original condition with no chips or cracks, the pattern is in excellent condition and the gilding is bright and unrubbed.  There is a miniscule nick to the rim in one place of 1 or 2mm maximum - too small to photograph and totally insignificant but mentioned for accuracy.

1971 Chance Glass Turquoise 'Canterbury' Pattern Round Plate #1

code: CHA-TURQCANT
1971 Chance Glass Turquoise 'Canterbury' Pattern Round Plate #1
£20.00

This type of Chance glass is fabulously funky and is, in our opinion, amongst the best designs that Chance produced during the 1970s - they would have been hugely fashionable at the time.  This particular dish is round in shape with a fluted and gilded rim and with their psychedelic flowery 'Canterbury' pattern screenprinted on the reverse in orange - it looks brilliant on display.  We think these are great, this is a scarce Chance pattern and a must for any serious retro and/or Chance glass collector.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

SIZE:   Diameter 9.5in/24cm   Weight 355g

CONDITION:  In really good original condition with no chips or other damage and very little wear to the gilt edge - there is a small area of scratches (approx. 1in/3cm in length) to the top surface of the plate in one place - this has been reflected in the price.

Set of Six 1960s Chance Glass 'Calypto' Tumblers designed by Michael Harris

code: CHA-CALYPTO1A
Set of Six 1960s Chance Glass 'Calypto' Tumblers designed by Michael Harris
£40.00

The 'Calypto' pattern of stylised eucalyptus leaves and flowers was designed in 1959 by the legendary and illustrious late Michael Harris (of Mdina and Isle of Wight glass fame).  Here we have a set of six tumblers decorated in the 'Calypto' pattern and with thick gold rims - whilst they're not rare one doesn't see glasses as often as the plates and other flatware produced in this design.  Very pretty and usuable items - also a wonderful early example of the work of Michael Harris.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

SIZE:  Height  4.75in/12cm   Combined Weight  850g

CONDITION:  Lovely original undamaged condition - no chips, cracks or fleabites and no rubbing to the original gold rims - these look unused.
