Italian glass from Murano (neighbouring island to Venice in the Venetian lagoon) has a long history and strong family traditions of glass making. Murano and Italian glass in general is highly prized and internationally famed for it’s quality and fine craftsmanship. Architects, artists and sculptors were employed to produce exciting new designs for the master glassmakers to interpret and create their breathtakingly beautiful glassware in an array of colours, styles and revolutionary techniques.

Some of these techniques include millefiore (literal translation ‘a thousand flowers’), murrine (star shaped mosaic), pezzato (patchwork type glass typical of Venini), tessuto (woven, dense vertical canes encased in clear glass), sommerso (submerged layers of cased glass often coloured), pulegoso (bubbled, foam like surface), aventurine (opaque or semi-opaque glass incorporating sparkling gold, silver or coppers flecks of metal), battuto (hammered metal type surface) amongst others too many to mention here.

There are a number of manufacturers and vendors that make up what is collectively known as Murano glass such as Barovier & Toso, Salviati & Co, Vetraria Archimede Seguso, Seguso Vetri D’Arte, Venini & Co, Barbini, AVEM, Fratelli Toso and employing many legendary designers and glassmakers including Archimede Seguso, Flavio Poli, Napoleone Barovier, Paolo Venini, Gio Ponti, Ercole Barovier, Ermanno Toso, Fulvio Bianconi, Dino Martens, Emilio Nason, Gino Cenedese, Alfredo Barbini, Luciano Gasparia and Carlo Moretti to name just a few.
