Scandinavian Pottery 1

These are delightful - pottery wall plaques designed by Bjorn Wiinblad for the Danish ceramics company Nymolle sometime in the 1960s or 70s.  Featuring whimsical illustrations so typical of Wiinblad's work this range covers the months of the year and we believe it tells the story of a couple meeting,  their courtship and marriage and the birth of their child.  This particular plaque is for September.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

A Swedish design classic - a Bla Eld (Blue Fire) white side plate designed by Hertha Bengtsson in 1949 and manufactured by Rorstrand between 1950 and 1971.  It is decorated with a brilliant herringbone type diagonal surface pattern and in a bright white high gloss glaze.  Marked to the base with the three crowns and 'Rorstrand Sweden 582' (we have four of these for sale separately, price given is for one plate).  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

Offered for sale here is an absolutely fabulous rare item from the Rorstrand Atelje (Studio) range - an extremely large and very heavy ceramic wall plaque designed by Olle Alberius and decorated with a vibrant abstract bright orange glazed design in relief.  Olle Alberius worked for Rorstrand from 1963 until 1971 in the role of Artistic Director.  This is a seriously iconic example of Swedish design - marked to the reverse with the Rorstrand 'R' and three crowns studio mark, the artist's initials 'OA' and 'Sweden Kavalkad 9'.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

These jugs, from the famous Finnish manufacturer, Arabia,  date from the 1960s and are becoming very highly collected items indeed.  This particular jug is decorated with a stylised cow design - other designs in the series include a butterfly and a cat. Whilst I've often seen these attributed to the famous ceramics and glass designer, Kaj Franck, I haven't yet been able to establish if this is actually the case.  Fully stamped to the base with 'ARABIA (Wartsila Finland'.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

This is a truly wonderful vintage plate - from the famous Finnish ceramic manufacturer, Arabia, and in the highly sought after range 'Emilia' - which was in production from 1949-1964.  Designed by Raija Uosikkinen, it features a charming black on white illustration of an elegant lady on a bicycle wearing a big flowery hat and surrounded with flowers.  It is marked to the base with 'Arabia Made in Finland 8'.  Please see all photographs below for alternative views and close-ups.

This is yet another wonderful vintage plate from the Finnish ceramic manufacturer, Arabia, from the highly sought after range 'Emilia' - which was in production from 1949-1964.  Designed by Raija Uosikkinen, it is a rectangular shape with a slight dip to the plain end which may have been designed to house a bowl and to the other side is a charming black on white illustration of a two elegant ladies taking tea in a garden surrounded by flowers.  It is marked to the base with 'Arabia Made in Finland, Decor Protected by Glaze EMILIA 3' and the impressed initials 'MB'.  Please see all photographs below for alternative views and close-ups.

These are simply stunning!  From the famous Finnish ceramic manufacturer, Arabia, and dating from 1971 here is a matching set of two navy blue and white hand painted ceramic lidded pots designed by Hillka-Liisa Ahola.  These were probably intended for use on a lady's dressing table to hold small items.  One pot is short and round with a dark blue base and a white glazed lid beautifully decorated with a gorgeous paisley type design in various hues of blue and lilac, the other pot is tall with a dark blue lid and the same blue paisley type design all around the base.  They're extremely attractive and decorative items and of the quality one would expect from Arabia.  Hand painted to the bases with 'Arabia Finland H-L. Ahola/MRR' (to the base of the squat pot) and 'Arabia Finland H-L. Ahola/71' (to the base of the taller pot).  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

Another fabulous piece of retro Scandinavian ceramics from the famous Finnish manufacturer, Arabia, and in the highly sought after 'Pomona' Strawberry design - which was in production from 1965-1975.  Designed by Raija Uosikkinen, it features bright red strawberries and green stalks on a white ground and is marked to the base with 'Arabia Made in Finland 1-66'.  With it's original lid.  Please see all photographs below for alternative views and close-ups.

From Egersund, Norway, here is a really nice ceramic sugar bowl with a wooden lid dating from the 1950's.  With a brilliant repeating stylised pattern around the outside this is a decorative as well as functional piece of retro Scandinavian pottery.  Stamped to the base in brown with a circular stamp of the words 'Egersund Norway' around a picture of a Viking longboat.

Here is a large wall plaque decorated with the image of three men riding an elephant from the Unik series designed in the 1960's by Lisa Larson for Gustavsberg (Sweden) and in production from 1967 until 1986.  With fantastic glazes in shades of blue, green and brown and with a highly textured surface finish there were many different designs (mostly animals) in the series and we intend, in time, to carry them all.  This is an iconic example of retro/vintage Scandinavian design from a highly respected and sought after artist - marked to the front of the tile with 'Lisa L Gustavsberg'.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

This is a fantastic example of retro/vintage Scandinavian ceramics - dating from the 1960's by JIE Gantofta (Sweden) and designed by the legendary Anita Nylund we have a stunning (and rare) ceramic storage container with it's original wooden lid.  It is  handpainted around the outside with various scenes in vibrant glazes onto a bright white ground - this is an extremely decorative item that would look fabulous on display on it's own or with other Swedish ceramics of the period.  This particular design is highly collectable.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.

This is a fantastic example of retro/vintage Scandinavian ceramics - dating from the 1960's by JIE Gantofta (Sweden) and designed by the legendary Anita Nylund we have a stunning pottery coffee container with it's original wooden lid (a little shabby however and the seal is perished).  The container is handpainted around the outside with various scenes in vibrant glazes onto a bright white ground - with abstract patterns and shapes around the main designs.  This is an extremely decorative item that would look fabulous on display on it's own or with other Swedish ceramics of the period and matches the rice container we also have for sale.  Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.
