1960's Bitossi/Raymor Large Brown & Orange Square Ashtray |
This is the most impressive and funkiest pottery ashtray we've found so far - it's very large and heavy and we love the way the brown, almost wooden effect to the glaze around the rim complements the incredible vibrant orange and yellow glazes of the bowl. We're estimating this piece to have been manufactured by either Bitossi or Raymor during the 1960's (it is stamped very clearly to the base with 'ITALY'). The rim has impressed 'scrolls' plus cigarette rests to two sides and the bowl is impressed with a flower pattern. This is a fab ashtray that looks incredible on display - we'd suggest it was also fairly unusual in both colour and style having not seen any others (yet!) and would make a very decorative addition to any retro ceramics collection. 1960's Hornsea Pottery Blue & White Salt & Pepper Set |
Dating from the 1960's and from the famous English pottery, Hornsea, here is a wonderful salt and pepper set in a fabulous 'cut-out' type pattern in pale blue and white with a matching blue coloured tray for them both to sit on almost certainly designed by the legendary John Clappison. Tall and elegantly tapering to the top and still bearing their original rubber stoppers the salt and pepper pots are not marked to the bases, neither is the base however they are unmistakeably Hornsea production. I don't believe these have ever been used - they're in excellent condition and, with many salt and pepper pots that have been used you find the holes chipped from where things have been prodded into them over the years (usually a fork prong). In this instance not only are the holes in pristine condition they are also rather too large for use - the salt pot in particular has a very large hole that would allow far too much salt out - this may well be the reason for their survival in such amazing condition. They simply weren't practical to be used everyday and have been safely displayed instead. Please see all photographs for alternative views and close-ups.
